So, Someone recently reached out to me and asked me “Is it wrong not to have your purpose in life?” I thought, Wow what a great question, and a great way to open up my dialogue series Chic Chat. Here, we discuss personal matters, and I give you my honest real world experience and opinion on it. Believe it or not, I have had my share of real world experiences so I can safely say I am up to the challenge of answering your questions. Before we can discuss whether or not it’s “wrong” not to have your purpose in life, you must first define what purpose is.
What Do We Mean By “Purpose”?
We hear the word “purpose” thrown around a lot. Primarily at specific age milestones in our lives, like 16, 18, 21, 30 and so on. I believe that purpose has a different definition based on the person defining it. For example, to your instructor purpose can mean your future career. Your parents may feel the same way as the instructor, but take it a step further and mean your life as an adult. A philosopher may mean your actual reason for existence. For you, it might mean your life as a whole. All of these definitions are right in their own way.
However: NO ONE CAN DEFINE YOUR PURPOSE BUT YOU.
Which Basically Means…
That only you can decide if not having a purpose is a bad thing for you. I know it sounds corny, but I’m not done making my point.
I know what it’s like not to have a purpose. In fact, I would say up until last year I did not have a DEFINITE purpose. Sure I had things going for myself. Yeah I have things worth living for, but actually KNOWING what my purpose was, was completely absent. I had no clue. And I wasn’t bothered by it, but I knew something was definitely missing.
When you live your life without a purpose you just only exist.
Not having ANY purpose isn’t necessarily bad, but you’re basically living your life without a reason. I started to say ‘living your life without direction’, but even that is a purpose. To decide to live your life without a direction or Carpe Diem, is still living with a purpose. Why? Because you still DECIDED to take that route for your life.
My Definition of Purpose
Purpose to me means “to DECIDE the direction of your life.” I emphasized decide because most of us live a life that we feel we don’t want, or we feel we have no choice. There is ALWAYS A CHOICE and YOU are the only one that can make it. Things happen to us in our lives, and we can decided how it will affect the life we choose for ourselves.
If you are the one who decides the direction of your life, and direction is your purpose then again only you can decide if only existing is a bad thing.
